Film: The Alligator People (1959)

Summary: When you lose an arm and/or a leg, the best thing to do is get a fake replacement or just live with it. Tampering with the whole thing can only result in things that science just isn't prepared for. One of many people at the receiving end of one of these incidents was poor Paul Webster, and if he weren't dead, he'd tell you all about it.

History: After nearly dying in a plane crash, Mr. Webster found a second chance at life when he was given treatment by Dr. Mark Sinclair in a plantation located at the heart of Louisiana's marshlands. This doctor thought he had found the key to regrowing limbs through nuclear power and the regenerative qualities of reptiles, particularly alligators. At first, everything went just as planned, but a year later, Paul and everyone else who partook in the experiment began to feel like they were changing. And change they did, as they slowly but surely began grow scaly skin and feel more like the reptiles that helped save them. Poor Paul couldn't bear to let his wife know about this, so he retreated back to the plantation to live with his mother. It wasn't long before his wife followed him, looking for answers.

Final Fate: The crazy local swamp hermit butchers any chance of reversing Paul's conditions by accidentally sabotaging the machine that did so. In fact, it causes Paul to regress even further until he sports an alligator's head! After running into the swamp in a fury, he ends up sinking into quicksand, ending his miserable life.

Powers/Abilities: None, except for perhaps increased strength.

Weakness: Anything conventional.

Scariness Factor: 1-Before the full transformation, Paul, despite being a rather tragic figure, sounds like the Cookie Monster after getting punched in the throat too many times. Afterwards, he's a guy in a gym shirt wearing a stiff Halloween mask. Fail.

Trivia: -It's often said that Paul and his backstory served as inspiration for the Lizard, a recurring villain from the Spider-Man comics.

-Somehow, this film received a computer game adaptation in 1983 for the Atari 2600, but it was never released to the public. Considering how video games were fairing back in the early 80s, it was probably for the best.
